Action Research Plan Meeting the Reading Needs of Lower Elementary School Students EDLD 5301 Research – EA 1188
Goal:  The goal of my action research plan is to determine ways to increase the reading achievement of students in grades 1 through 3; therefore decreasing the number of students who are identified as at-risk, struggling, or below level.
Evaluate how students and parents view & conduct reading in the home Family Survey by Pearson Education August 23 rd August 27 th   Kym Celestine-Franklin 3.  Send home a family reading survey Review data & determine the percentage of students that are visual learners, auditory learners, tactile, or kinesthetic learners The Personal Learning Styles Inventory for Students from howtolearn.com August 23 rd September 3 rd Kym Celestine-Franklin 2.  Administer learning styles inventory to students in targeted population Review data & determine the percentage of students identified as at-risk, struggling, or below level based on previous year’s data TAKS, ITBS, TPRI and AEIS reports July 26 th August 20 th Kym Celestine-Franklin Reading Coaches Reading Interventionists Principal 1.  Analyze students data in Grades 1 - 3 Evaluation Needed Resources Timeline: Start/End Person(s) Responsible Action  Step(s)
Students  identified as Tier 3 are placed in tutorials with Reading interventionist Treasures by Macmillan-McGraw-Hill Assessment October 1 st   Reading Interventionists 6.  Administer 6 weeks Reading Benchmark 1 Use Eduphoria Aware software to identify students as at-risk, struggling, or below level Identified students are placed in classroom tutorials with teacher TPRI 2010 – 2014 Early Reading Assessment September 13 th September 24 th   Classroom Teachers in Grades 1 - 3 5.  Administer Beginning of the Year TPRI Provide teachers with surveys to analyze the effectiveness of the suggested methods in their classrooms Bloom’s Taxonomy Howard Gardner’s Theories Ideas from Ron Brown maker of Intelli-Tunes Reading & Instruction Strategies September 6 th September 27 th Kym Celestine-Franklin 4.  Mini workshop for teachers on incorporating the four main learning styles during their reading instruction
Dismiss & replace students in tutorial groups, if appropriate Treasures by Macmillan-McGraw-Hill Assessment November 12 th Reading Interventionist 10.  Administer 6 weeks Reading Benchmark 2 Conduct & review progress of students identified as at-risk, struggling, or below level Review the Reading & Instruction Strategies with teachers TPRI Early Reading Assessment Results, ITBS data and Treasures by Macmillan-McGraw-Hill Benchmark Assessment Results October 26 th Kym Celestine-Franklin Reading Coaches Reading Interventionists Principal 9.
